A major part of our vineyard carries the prestigious “Erstes Gewächs”- classification whose origins lie in the strength of the soil structure together with the gradiant potential of the slopes. In fact, 95 per cent of our 15 hectares of vineyards adhere to the stringent requirements of the classification “Erstes Gewächs” (First Growth).
The disitinctive soil type, in which the vines are cultivated, is composed mainly of slate and shale with quartzite in some areas. The heat retention of the rocky composition of the soil together with the influence of the sun reflecting off the Rhine help to shape the very special climate that we enjoy. This is further enhanced by the steep gradiant of the southerly facing slopes which guarantee the optimum angle of radiation.
