“MUSIK DAYS” AT
CASTLE CAPPENBERG
At the time of the Premonstratensian monastery, presumably in the late Middle Ages, there had already been a vineyard in Cappenberg, as with other monasteries in the region. At the latest in the 18th century, viticulture ceased in our area, which was especially related to the climate change due to the so-called »little ice age«, which lasted from the 16th to the beginning of the 19th century and did not allow wine to grow here anymore.
The name „vineyard“ has survived to this day (as a field designation) and so in 2017 we decided to revive viticulture in Cappenberg on the slope of the Schlossberg and plant Riesling on an area of 0.3 ha. In the future, the grapes will be processed into wine as part of ecological management in the newly developed brewery cellars at the former estate; this is numbered and can only be purchased in a very small quantity.
The Cappenberger Schlossberg marks the northernmost vineyard in North Rhine-Westphalia.
